Renaissance Center exhibit marks Black History Month

The Kingsport Art Guild is marking Black History Month with an exhibition of the art of Alan M. Jones in the main gallery of the Renaissance Center, 1200 E. Center St., Kingsport.

The show will hang through Feb. 21. An opening reception will be held from 2 to 4 p.m., Sunday, Jan. 27. Admission is free.

Jones, a freelance artist from Knoxville, is manager of administration and disadvantaged business enterprise liaison for the Metropolitan Knoxville Airport Authority. He serves as interim pastor for Concord Original Church of God and is the former pastor of Asbury United Methodist Church in Clinton, Tenn.

Jones also works as art director at the Literacy Imperative Center in Knoxville and has worked as a research associate with the Community Partnership Center of the University of Tennessee.

As an artist, Jones paints under the pseudonym "Theophilus." His paintings reflect black heritage, social statement and Biblical themes in an effort to strengthen communities.

He has completed church murals, community murals, portraits as well as a series entitled "Blacks in the Bible."

He completed drawing designs for the new Black Cultural Center brick frieze and the tile floor at the University of Tennessee.

As former pastor of Asbury UMC, Jones researched and assisted in the development of the Green McAdoo Cultural Center, a museum that houses the civil rights history of the Clinton Twelve. Out of this initiative came an award-winning documentary film, "The Clinton Twelve," written by Keith McDaniel and narrated by James Earl Jones.

In 2003, Jones completed a mural titled "Walk of Faith" to commemorate the historic desegregation of Clinton High School in 1956. The mural hangs in the sanctuary of Asbury UMC in Clinton.

Prior to his ministry, Jones worked for approximately 20 years with Knoxville's Community Development Corporation in a variety of areas, including human resources, housing and community-based programs. He is also former associate pastor of Mt. Zion Baptist Church and assisted at Martin Chapel United Methodist Church as well.

As an independent minister, Jones, along with sons Xavier and Salathiel Jones, has developed an e-ministry at www.iam-ministry.org.

His project "To America With Love" is a historical sketch compiled to call America to national repentance and revival. Jones has recently written and illustrated a book called "Signs of the Times." In this faith-based endeavor, Jones seeks to illuminate the Biblical prophecies that predict the second advent of Jesus Christ.

Jones is married to Joyce Crippen Jones. The couple has two granddaughters, Xcia and Hadassah.

Tourists who still have the energy after visiting the various temples, pagodas and stupas in Bagan can also visit Bagan Archeological Museum, which may be ugly in appearance because of the mixture of the new and old architectural styles, but houses a large number of portable finds from the temples.
