VI conjures 'Blithe Spirit'

Imagine a classic comedy about "things that go bump in the night" ... and that bump turns out to be your ex.

Virginia Intermont College's theatre department will present Noel Coward's "Blithe Spirit" at 7:30 p.m., Nov. 8-10 and at 2:30 p.m., Nov. 11 in Trayer Theatre in the Anne Worrell Fine Arts Center on campus. General admission tickets are $10 for adults, $8 for senior citizens and $5 for students, and will be available at the door.

Elvira, who returns from the great beyond, uses her haunting charms to woo former husband Charles to the eternal vexation of his present wife, Ruth. A wildly Bohemian medium, a frantic maid and curious neighbors add their own antics to the mix, creating an outrageous evening of entertainment as only Noel Coward can deliver.

The play's cast includes VI Theatre majors Jenna McClelland-Nease of Maryville as the enchanting Elvira; Mary Hannah Garber of Boones Mill, Va., as woe-begone Ruth Condomine; Chris Hobbs of Bristol, Va., and Lindsay Soja from Hartly, Del., as the neighbors, Dr. and Mrs. Bradman; and Stephanie McIntyre of Stuart, Va., as the eccentric psychic Madame Arcati. Rounding out the cast are VI students Adam Kuykendall of Bristol, Va., as Charles Condomine and Sarah Tomlinson from Nickelsville, Va., as Edith.

Bonny Gable, VI's associate professor of theatre, directs the show, with design and technical direction by Dale Marshall, VI's assistant professor of theatre. Stage management is by VI theatre majors Paul Pratt of Glade Spring, Va., and Salonia Thorn of Ellenboro, N.C. Technical assistance is by VI students Marjorie Fishback, Lillie Sullivan and Zoi Bell.
