Have your own ‘Mediterranean Adventure’ at Primo’s

Everyone has a favorite Italian restaurant. Even Billy Joel did, and he wrote a song about his. Growing up, my family’s favorite place for Italian was in a converted 1890s-era bank building. No red-checked tablecloths or chianti-bottle candle holders could be found here. The place had more marble, columns, white linen napery and frescoes than the Roman Forum. The food they produced matched the décor: lovely to look at, each bite a properly prepared and authentic treat for the pal...

Poor Trav's at the Blue Circle packs a good sammie

At a glance: Poor Trav’s Deli (at the Blue Circle), 101 Broad St., Elizabethton, Tenn.; 423-543-6128; Monday-Saturday, 8 a.m.-9:45 p.m.; credit cards accepted.
In my lifetime I’ve had more deli sandwiches that I’ve had haircuts. Usually, these lunchtime meals have been to-go orders, and the side items are typically one of three — a bag of chips, or a pickle, or on winter days, a small bowl of soup.
I have a new one to add to that list: a pickled egg.
    At Poor Trav&rs...

    Sycamore Shoals seeking volunteer seamstresses

From the establishment of the Watauga Association to the Transylvania Purchase to the muster of the Overmountain Men, Sycamore Shoals played a significant role in 18th century America, serving as the setting for some of the most dramatic events in the expansion of the nation’s western boundary.
And while there’s much to learn from browsing the educational displays inside the Elizabethton park’s visitors center or exploring its reconstruction of Fort Watauga, living history ...

You hear of daddy’s girls and mama’s boys, well, I was a grandma’s boy. Actually, I called her nanny, and we were buddies. She passed away years ago, but I still laugh at the funny things she would do and say, especially her one-liners.

For your classic ‘old-timey burger joint’ fare, try JB’s

Finding a restaurant that has cheeseburgers, greasy onion rings and a Coke on the menu requires absolutely zero effort. Heck, if I had to, I could walk to one in my neighborhood. But the list of locally owned places that serve burgers, onion rings, soft drinks AND ice cream cones at the same counter is much shorter.
A reader sent an e-mail encouraging me to visit JB’s, describing the place as an “oldtimey burger joint.” Wow, it seems some readers know the way to my heart.

Dee’s Cafe: Classic country breakfast in downtown Elizabethton

With the exception of a few four-legged animals and their owners, or the occasional merchant arriving for work early, all is rather quiet just before sunrise along the streets of downtown Elizabethton. At 6 a.m., the “open” sign in the window of Dee’s Café shines to drivers along Elk Avenue.
Elizabethton residents know this corner spot as the former home of Hook’s, a longtime Carter County staple. And it’s there in this close-knit community during this ea...

New barbecue joint lacks frills, but the food is good

Perhaps in another lifetime I’ll start my own restaurant. I’ve entertained the thought from time to time, but before doing so, I will need to do a few things, which include learning how to cook and also gaining a love for cooking.
If I ever do, one thing’s for certain: I won’t be going into the barbecue business. Please don’t get me wrong. I love barbecue — good barbecue, that is, but when it comes to this particular Southern cuisine, people aren’t a...

Mystery Diner - Bonnie Kate Café, Elizabethton

Bonnie Kate Theatre is an icon of downtown Elizabethton. Known for its rocking chairs and having only two screens, the theater has been showing films for as long as I can remember. On the other hand, the café, located adjacent to the lobby, is rather new.
The dining room has a warm bistro feel, making it an ideal place for breakfast or lunch, which is all they serve, except for the upscale dinner on Friday evenings. I was told that they may be opening Saturday nights soon.
