Blue Moon to stage thriller ‘Deathtrap‘
By staff report

The Blue Moon Dinner Theatre opens the classic thriller Deathtrap on Friday, September 25. Performances will run through November 7, 2009, and feature a Broadway style live performance and a five course, candlelit meal. The Blue Moon Dinner Theatre is located in Downtown Johnson City at 215 E. Main Street. Reservations can be made by calling 423-232-1350 or by visiting the theatre online at bluemoondinnertheatre.com. Deathtrap contains strong language, adult situations, and simulated violence; no one under the age of eighteen will be admitted without a parent or legal guardian.

Deathtrap, by Ira Levin, holds the record as the longest running mystery/thriller on Broadway. Ira Levin is the author of such classics as Rosemary’s Baby and The Stepford Wives. A London revival of the stage play is in the works for next year, starring Twilight heartthrob Robert Pattinson in the part of Clifford. During its Broadway run, Deathtrap received nominations for four Tony Awards and two Drama Desk awards. The 1982 film version starred Michael Caine, Christopher Reeve, and Dyan Cannon.

The plot surrounds playwright Sydney Bruhl, his wife, Myra, and his writing student, Clifford. When Sydney receives a manuscript of his student’s new play, he is amazed at its moneymaking potential. Sydney jokes that he should bump off the student and send the play out under his own name. Or is he joking. The tension mounts when Cliff arrives and Sydney finds out no one else knows about the play. What happens next is one of the most finely crafted plots in theatre history. Audiences all over the world have been kept on the edge of their seats.

“It’s not a “who done it” but a “who’ll do it,” says director Thomas Townsend. “We have assembled a group of seasoned actors who have grabbed onto these characters and are ready to really impress . . . up until the final moments, audiences will not know what to expect.”

Leading the cast in the role of Sydney is Edward Breese, with Stephanie Sherwood as Myra and Brad Smith as Clifford. The cast also features Kallie Gay as Helga ten Dorp and Angus Walton as Porter Milgrim.

The five course dinner includes an appetizer, butternut squash bisque, baby spinach salad with green apples and toasted walnuts tossed in honey-mustard vinaigrette, a duet main course featuring grilled chicken breast and a roasted pork loin with blueberry-balsamic reduction, an autumn-inspired potato-pumpkin mash, with a side of flavorful, gently cooked greens. The Chef will offer a choice of peach or apple cobbler for dessert.

The Blue Moon is pleased to announce the continuation of its Patron Appreciation Discount. All tickets for performances for Deathtrap are discounted to $34.99 each (plus tax) and includes dinner and the performance. Dessert/performance tickets and show-only tickets are available.
