Rewind the clock and step into the 1930s jazz era with the Science Hill High School Choral Department as they stage the Cole Porter musical comedy “Anything Goes.”
“A 25-foot ocean liner has been constructed by our very own Science Hill Woodshop to set the stage. This is something you definitely won’t want to miss seeing. Come be with us — you won’t be disappointed,” director June Oaks said in a news release.
The musical, which opens Nov. 5, will feature a cast of 24 singers, actors and dancers accompanied by a 12-member jazz ensemble, directed by Susan Lambert. Evening performances will be Nov. 5, 7 and 12-14 at 7 p.m., with a Nov. 8 matinee at 3 p.m.
Set in 1933, the musical plot features Reno Sweeney (played by Sarah Nimrichter), an evangelist turned nightclub singer, who sails from New York on a Europe-bound ocean liner to pursue her love-interest Billy Crocker (played by Michael Conflenti). Crocker has stowed away with a fake passport to win back his lost love Hope Harcourt (played by Lacy Snapp).
Harcourt is intent on marrying Sir Evelyn Oakleigh (played by Robert Forney) once the ocean liner reaches England. When the ship sets sail and the comedy ensues, audience members will be treated to renditions of Cole Porter hits, including “Anything Goes,” “Friendship” and “It’s De-Lovely.”
Dance numbers have been choreographed by Robin Beals, associate director of Gay Whitt School of Dance. Set construction has been directed by Benny Stinson, Science Hill teacher.
“We’ve received unparalleled support from the Science Hill administration, staff and community,” Oaks said. “Our students have certainly worked extremely hard to give you a night of outstanding entertainment. Give us a call. We’ll save you a seat.”
Tickets may be reserved in advance or purchased at the door. Ticket prices are $10 for adults, $7 for seniors and groups, and $5 for students.
