Transit systems available in all three cities
By Staff reports

Though travel by personal car is the transportation of choice for most residents of the Tri-Cities area, Kingsport, Johnson City and Bristol each offers transit systems with routes throughout the cities.

The Kingsport Area Transit System offers four routes to take riders to shopping, dining and medical districts in town as well as the Social Security office. It operates from 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Friday. Buses do not run on Christmas Day but are available on other public holidays that occur on weekdays.

Fare to ride a KATS bus is 50 cents. Those who qualify under Americans with Disabilities Act standards receive custom transportation to doctors’ appointments, shopping and other needs for $1. To arrange for pickup, customers should call 224-2413 24 hours in advance. For more information, call 224-2611.

The Johnson City Transit System operates from 6:15 a.m. to 6:15 p.m., Monday through Friday, and from 8:15 a.m. to 5:15 p.m., Saturday. JCT buses do not operate on Sundays, New Year’s Day, Martin Luther King’s Birthday, Memorial Day, Fourth of July, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day, the Friday after Thanksgiving, and Christmas Day.

Johnson City Transit System operates fixed route services, para-transit services for individuals with disabilities, various demand-response call-in services, job access, charter services and school bus transportation.

JCT operations are centered around the Regional Transportation Center at 137 W. Market St., which serves not only as a transfer point for JCT riders, but local taxi companies.

Fares are 60 cents for those 12 to 64; and 30 cents for adults 65 and older, disabled citizens, Medicare patients and students in grades 1 through 5. Children 5 and younger are free when accompanied by an adult. Transfers are 10 cents. One-month express passes are $20. Multi-ride passes (25 one-way trips) are $12. Summer fun passes for children 6 to 17 to use on an unlimited basis during the summer are $20.

For more information, call 929-7119.

Bristol Tennessee Transit provides service on three routes in Bristol, Tenn. Transfers to Bristol, Va., can be made easily at the downtown transit station.

Fares are 60 cents for those 6 and older. Children younger than 6 are free when accompanied by an adult. Adults 55 and older and disabled citizens may ride for 30 cents during off-peak hours, which are 9:45 a.m. to 2:15 p.m. Transfers are 10 cents.

All Bristol Tennessee Transit and Bristol Virginia Transit buses meet at the downtown transfer center in the 800 block of State Street by the “Birthplace of Country Music” mural.

Services for the elderly and disabled who are not able to use the regular bus service are available. Patrons must be certified, and certification forms are available from each transit system.
