New residents must get driver’s license within 30 days
By Staff report
New residents to Tennessee who have a valid out-of-state driver’s license have 30 days after establishing residency to obtain a Tennessee driver’s license, according to the Tennessee Department of Safety.
You also must title and register your vehicle in the state.
To obtain a Tennessee license, a new resident must surrender his out-of-state license at a license testing location. Tennessee does not allow a driver to possess more than one valid license.
Also, new residents must show two forms of proof of residency — such as a utility bill, current bank statement, current rental or mortgage contract or deed of sale of property, current insurance policy or current employer verification.
Other documents are also acceptable and can be confirmed by calling a driver’s license testing station.
If a new resident has a valid license from another state, they will only be required to take the vision test to convert to a Tennessee license. If the license has expired, a written and vision test is required.
The cost for obtaining a Tennessee license is $19.50 for a standard five-year license.
To title and register your vehicle, take the current registration and certificate to your county clerk. There is an $8 title fee and $24 passenger vehicle registration fee.
Depending on what county you live in, there may be county fees, or wheel tax, as well. The amount will vary.
Tennessee drivers are not required to carry liability insurance, but are subject to the state’s Financial Responsibility Law. The law is designed to protect the public from financially irresponsible drivers who become involved in an accident.
To show proof of financial responsibility, drivers must be able to produce documentation of a valid insurance policy or a certificate from the Department of Safety noting that a cash deposit or bond has been posted in the amount required by the law.
