4 colleges serve the region
By staff report

The Tri-Cities region has many higher education opportunities with a state university, community college and private liberal art colleges are all located here.

East Tennessee State University in Johnson City has awarded degrees to more than 72,000 people since it opened in 1911. About 40,000 ETSU alumni live within a 100-mile radius of the campus. The university offers more than 100 degree programs from bluegrass to medical degrees to around 11,500 students, who represent 42 states and 62 countries. ETSU has approximately 1,900 faculty and staff. Around 2,500 students live on campus.

In addition to branches in Kingsport, Bristol, Greeneville and Elizabethton, the university also has had an articulation agreement with Northeast State Technical Community College for many programs.

The university has more than a dozen intercollegiate teams.

The James H. Quillen College of Medicine is also a part of ETSU. Located at the James H. Quillen Veterans Affairs campus, the medical school serves around 250 students and trains around 250 residents a year.

Northeast State Community College’s main campus is located in Blountville, with teaching sites in Kingsport, Elizabethton and Gray. Some 4,500 students attend the college through traditional classes, Internet courses, telecourses, weekend college or at teaching sites.

NSCC has received national attention along with the city of Kingsport and Sullivan County for a scholarship program in which those local governments pay tuition for local high school graduates to attend the school. NSCC offers associate’s degrees and pre-professional degrees as well as technical and academic certificates.

The Regional Center for Applied Technology, at 222 W. Main St., Kingsport, is an offshoot of NSCC. College-credit courses are offered in computer design, business management and office administration technology — in addition to customized company-specific training programs and continuing education credit courses.

Milligan College is a four-year private Christian liberal arts college located just outside Johnson City. The college offers more than 25 academic majors and two master’s degrees to an average of 900 students from more than 40 states and 10 countries.

King College is a private, four-year, Presbyterian-affiliated liberal arts institution founded in 1867. Four baccalaureate degrees in more than 60 majors, minors and concentrations are offered. The Center for Graduate and Professional Studies administers four adult-oriented degree programs: the masters of business administration, RN to BSN program, the bachelor of business administration and the post baccalaureate teacher licensure. King College recently has added four new majors to prepare students for some of the most popular and most lucrative careers of the 21st century; forensic Sciences, neuroscience, pre-physical therapy, and technical and professional communication.

King is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools and had been ranked by U.S. News and World Report as one of the top regional liberal arts schools for 14 consecutive years (1989-2003). Peterson’s Top Colleges for Science ranks King in the top 200 programs nationwide for science and mathematics.
