Halloween Bash 2017 to feature $1,500 best costume contest

You have about a month and a half to plan your costume for this year’s Kingsport Halloween Bash, an annual fundraiser for Keep Kingsport Beautiful. And you might want to put special thought into making your choice. The best costume contest this year will award $1,500 in cash plus other prizes.

The 18-and-over-only event — ID is required — on Saturday, Oct. 28, at the Kingsport Farmers Market will feature live music by Acoustifried

It is billed as the largest Halloween party in the Tri-Cites after an overwhelming turnout last year.

“We had a very, very successful 2016 Halloween Bash,” said event organizer James Phillips at a press conference Thursday. “We were hoping for 500 (attendees), expecting 300, and we had 600 last year. So we are definitely the largest Halloween party in the Tri-Cities. We were so pleased with the turnout last year and we want to keep growing this event. One step we’ve taken to do that is increasing the costume contest prize money from $1,000 to $1,500.”

The first-place winner will receive $1,000. New this year: cash prizes also for second- and third-place winners, as well as prizes for fourth- and fifth-place winners. The contest is sponsored by Halloween Express.

Another addition this year: The day’s festivities will kick off with the Food City Trunk or Treat from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m., also at the Farmers Market. This event is free for all ages.

The Halloween Bash, presented by Bud Light, runs from 6 p.m. to midnight and in addition to live music will include food trucks, beer, soda and water sales, a DJ, corn hole games, and the Halloween Express costume contest (at 9:30). Acoustifried is scheduled to perform two sets, one at 8 p.m. and a second at 10 p.m.

The festival is inside the Farmers Market building, but large tents will be set up outside for eating and sitting.

“We have such a great time at this event and the best part is we are raising money for a great cause,” KKB Director Robin Cleary said. “Keep Kingsport Beautiful’s goal is to combine environmental education and hands-on stewardship to keep Kingsport clean, green and beautiful. The proceeds from Halloween Bash allow us to do just that.”
