Mount Carmel kicks off Fun Fest with massive block party on July 7

The 31st Mount Carmel Block Party kicks off the Fun Fest season on Saturday, July 7 on Main Street.

This year’s block party promises to be an even bigger event than last year’s with lots of fun for the Mount Carmel community and its neighbors.

The event begins at 4 p.m. and concludes with a huge fireworks display at 11 p.m.

Four bands will be featured on the big stage: Railway Express, Stone Creek Four, the Benny Wilson Band and Asylum Suite.

Matt “Elvis” Dollar will take to the small stage with his Million Dollar Band during set changes.

The 2018 Miss Mount Carmel contest registration begins at 10 a.m., and the pageant begins at 11 a.m. at the senior citizens center on the second floor of city hall.

The popular Car Show will be back this year with a special reserved section for motorcycles. The first 200 entries receive a Mount Carmel Block Party Dash Plaque.

The Kidz Zone will feature a carnival-like atmosphere with games and inflatables, and at dusk will feature a Kidz movie — “Sherlock Gnomes” — on the big screen.

Wrestling is back this year, and the Ricky Morton School of Wresting will have a big ring with several notable wrestlers participating.

There will be multiple food vendors and trucks, and Dairy Cup will be open during the block party.

Local employer the Brock Group will have a job fair tent with information about current job openings.

Mount Carmel 2018 Block Party T-shirts are available at Mitchell’s Drive Thru or at the city’s Horizon Credit Union Branch.

President and CEO Beverly Boling said that when Horizon Credit Union opened a branch in town in 2016, it vowed to bring back the Mount Carmel Block Party.

“Horizon Credit Union knew how important the block party was to Mount Carmel,” Boling said. “For years, it was one of the most popular block parties to kick off Fun Fest. The Mount Carmel Block Party had been on a four-year hiatus, and Horizon Credit Union wanted to be a leader in the return of this great event. We wanted to be a good neighbor and show commitment to the community by working to bring the event back to life.”

Boling added, “This year we are excited to announce that Eastman Credit Union is going to be the exclusive sponsor of the Mount Carmel Block Party fireworks.

“Many other Mount Carmel merchants have also thrown their support behind the block party, and with their help, we hope to make it bigger and better each year.”

It all starts at 4 p.m. with the Hawkins County Sheriff’s Department’s presentation of flags and Horizon Credit Union employee Melissa Dishner singing the national anthem.

The concerts start at 4:45 p.m. so get there early to place your lawn chair.

Don’t forget to bring the children a lawn chair or blanket so they can enjoy the movie. Please leave your pets at home. It’s just too hot for them.

Car Show participants can enter at the Builder’s First Source intersection beginning at 2 p.m.

There will be plenty of food, fun and enjoyment for everyone.
