Boone
Dotted with residential developments and quickly accessible from Kingsport, Bristol and Johnson City, Boone is located smack in the midst of the Tri-Cities and, unsurprisingly attracts a high concentration of both pleasure boaters and anglers on any given weekend. Boone was impounded in 1952 and has 1,532 acres at full pool. There are at least eight commercial boat docks and nine public boat ramps on the reservoir. The public recreation area at Boone Dam is the most popular, but public land can be found at various spots along the lake shore.

Cherokee
Situated downstream of South Holston, Watauga, Boone and Fort Patrick Henry, Cherokee is one of the oldest of the TVA reservoirs directly adjacent to the Tri-Cities. It is also considerably larger than its Upper Holston cousins - 30,300 acres at full pool. Considering public ramps and commercial marinas and boat docks combined, Cherokee Reservoir has no fewer than 40 boat access sites. The lake also has three public campgrounds and at least two private ones.

Douglas
Douglas is another more wide-open option for area boaters, impounding 30,400 acres at full pool. The reservoir is shared by Cocke, Jefferson and Sevier Counties. Including commercial marinas and boat docks, there are at least 25 boat launching sites on the reservoir. Rankin Wildlife Management Area is one of the main recreational areas on the lake.

Fort Patrick Henry
Due to Warriors Path State Park and its ready access from Kingsport, Fort Patrick Henry reservoir also sees relatively high densities of pleasure boaters, personal watercraft and water-skiers. Impounded in 1953, Fort Patrick Henry is even smaller than Boone - 872 acres at full pool. It has very few coves along it's 10-mile length, resembling a wide, deep river channel. Warriors Path State Park is the redominant public recreation area on the reservoir. There is one commercial boat dock and two public boat ramps.

Norris
Impounded in 1936, Norris is the oldest TVA reservoir in Northeast Tennessee and, at 34,000 acres at full pool, the largest. Located north of Knoxville, the reservoir is bounded by Clinton, Caryville and LaFollete, with Tazewell to the east of the main body of the lake. The lake is shared by Claiborne, Grainger, Union, Campbell and Anderson Counties. Commercial and public landings included, there are more than 40 boat access sites on the lake.

South Holston
South Holston is the northernmost reservoir of the upper Holston system, with about one-fourth of the lake falling on the Virginia side of the state line and the rest of it in Tennessee. The reservoir, which was completed in 1950, is 7,580 acres at full pool. South Holston reservoir has six commercial boat docks and nine public boat dock launching ramps. The three main public recreation areas are Sullivan County Park, Washington County Park and a TVA public use area around the dam and on the upper tailwaters below the dam.

Watauga
At 1,915 feet above sea level, Watauga has the highest elevation of Tennessee's major TVA reservoirs. Watauga's 314-foot dam is the highest in Northeast Tennessee and the reservoirs waters are deep, cold and relatively clear. Watauga Dam was completed in 1948, impounding 6,430 acres at full pool. A direct route to Watauga would be U.S. 321 from Hampton. The reservoir is shared by Carter County and Johnson County. There are at least six commercial boat docks and five public boat doaks serving the reservoir.
