Jef Roberts is a mainstay of the Tri-Cities music scene, and has been playing tunes around here since he was about three or four years old, it seems. Things have come full circle for him, as his band, Punchin' Judy, has moved into its own adulthood, and is still going strong. Nineteen years and a few member changes have given him a wealth of experience and perspective, and he was kind enough to drop in and share both with us this week.

Dave took the day off as he was a little under the weather, and he was sorely missed. Tom and I trudged forward with the madman Roberts, and fun was had by all - we could have told stories for hours on end, and never repeat a single one. So, give us a listen and see what you think. Then drop us a line and tell us what those thoughts may be. It's an endless cycle.

Hope you enjoy, I know we did.

Dave Manning is one of our favorite club owners in the tri-cities, and he came down to the studio to talk about his place in Bristol, O'Mainnin's, and what they have going on in the near and far. His place was a mob scene during Rhythm and Roots, and he and his staff handled it like champs. He seems to take care of things like that.

Tom busted him on the stairs (and Dave and I agreed…), and the load-in they create, but that seems to be the lone complaint about the downtown establishment for folks these days. We had a good time talking with him, and we hope you enjoy listening.

He owns and runs a couple of businesses, teaches guitar lessons, plays in more than a couple of musical projects, and always seems to have his hand in something. We had him on the podcast to talk about what is going on these days, and enjoyed the time.

Alan Gamble joined us on BuzzCutz this week and brought years of talent and experience behind a drum kit, on the road, and onstage to the table. Alan played his first gig in 1961, and shows no signs of slowing down - nor would we want him to. He is still as solid as the day he started, and is constantly in high demand for bands, gigs, and recording projects.

Alan is currently playing with the JimJams, Bag a'Cats, and Clattering Trees, a recording project with Kevin O'Donnell and Dave Sieg. Clattering Trees enlisted the aid of several good local musicians, including my wife, Vanessa Bentley, and Brandon Story, who you will hear singing on their second song. So sit back and enjoy the podcast and the music, which also includes a last goodbye.

This week was another first for the BuzzCutz crew, as we had our first club/venue owner in the studio. Leah Jobe, who has turned Halo into one of Johnson City's finest nightspots, joined us for this week's show, and we all had a great time talking music, movies, food, and anything else that came up. We recorded some of it, and you can listen to that part.

For some reason, my microphone did some weird strangeness, and I sound like a radio personality from 1937, but you can hear what I'm saying (To the horror of many listeners, I'm sure.). Sorry for the technical problems, if anyone is offended, please send donations to the Buzz, and we will use received monies to repair any problems along the way. Or for beer money.

The P.I.T.S. are a two-man band from Kingsport that are going on ten years of playing music together, and Chris and Luke are just passing the ripe age of 23. Those years together have helped them develop their sound, and helped them develop a friendship that was very evident as they appeared in the studio this week for the show. While Tom is not a big fan of leaving the bass out of the band, he seemed to enjoy the music, and we all had a fine conversation, and if you feel like you might be interested in hearing it, I highly suggest you do so.

This week's guests rolled in to the studio with years of experience in tow, and the stories they told gave a small glimpse into the plethora of tales you might be able to hear on any given meeting. Phil Davis, Alan Prince, and Robert Pickle make up the Soundpranos, and they have been working in this region for years running some of the best sound you could possibly find. We had a blast talking to them, and hope you do as well.

BuzzCutz 038 - The Parallelogram Episode
Posted on June 27th, 2008 by jared

Brock Hughston was our guest on the show this week, and was the first guest with an electronic music background to grace the studio. He will be performing with his band Remnants of Dissonance, at this year's Electronic Music Showcase in Kingsport, along with Mahoney and Peck and a plethora of others. Brock has a lot going on, and has been involved in several projects over the last several years, and it was a lot of fun to sit and talk to him about what he has done, and what he is doing.

Give it a listen.

We are now outdoors with the podcast! We are amongst the people, out in the streets, and burning up. Man is it hot out there.

Since it was hot, we had cool guests for the first of our outdoor excursions. The boys from Wolf Creek stopped in and gave us a fine interview, drank a beer or two, and had a blast. Ed, Jim, Kevin, and Jason have been playing great music for years, and now they are doing it together (With Robbie Stevens, who was unable to join us.), and doing it very well. We were very happy to have them on the program, so give it a listen and let us know what you think.

Tom was unable to join us this week, but we made do. He was sorely missed, and we hope he is back soon.

Robby Spencer brought his latest adventure to our offices in Kingsport, and was a very nice guest to have for our last indoor podcast for a while. Robby is a cult figure in our area, and for many reasons. An accomplished and experienced musician, he is also the host of his own very popular television show, and a frequent guest at The Pickin' Porch, as well as other regional bluegrass forums. It was a real treat for us to have him with us in the studio, and his visit elicited another first - our first "televised celebrity" visit (As well as our first "live" text request - from Tom's lovely wife.).

BuzzCutz #028 - The Sir Paul 28IF Episode

This week saw a bit of a change-up in the BuzzCutz format, as we were guest-less and host-less in a sense. David experienced a loss in his family this week, and was attending services, so he could not be with us. Many good wishes to Dave, who was sorely missed. We also were without the company of our scheduled guset, Jeremiah Nave, who got a good sound gig and was unable to attend. It's nice to hear about good people getting good jobs with music around here - we will reschedule.

So - Tom and I did our best to keep the conversation flowing, and recorded a slightly abbreviated version of the show. Hope you like it.

Folks will have a chance to see them this weekend, and we really appreciated them letting us help promote the show by coming on the podcast. Bassist Jeremiah Waldo represented the band and joined us for a spirited discussion of all things musical and current - and he got rather serious at times. Well worth the listen, we hope you enjoy it as much as we did.

Thomas, Jon, and Matt from Blindsight joined us in the studio this week, and were very happy they did. These guys are clean-cut, shy, and soft-spoken, but when the lights come up and the music starts, they are pure adrenaline and aggression. They come across as very genuine and passionate about what they do, and that conveys in their music as well. Hope everyone enjoys the show - we did.

This week on BuzzCutz:

Tarnished is a rock band from Johnson City that is picking up quite a following and working on their second CD. Saad Al-Ameri and Ed Williams are two of the members, and they paid us a visit this week just in time to critique a local eatery, praise a local recording studio, and promote their upcoming agenda. Their company was graciously welcomed by Tom and I, as Dave took the day to catch up on his massive workload.

A fun time was had by all, and we hope you enjoy the show.

This week's show brought us closer to the first days of spring, and forced us to pop a window open in the studio, where Tom had started to burn to death. The fellas from the Neverwills didn't sweat it, however, as they joined us for a lively conversation and a send-off for their Navy-bound drummer Tyler Humphries - good luck and best wishes, young man. Jerry Shoemaker and Josh Tipton let us know what is in the future for the band and its members, and we got to listen to their last album, which is top-notch.

Looking forward to the new Neverwills EP that is in the works? Keep an ear out and we'll let you know how it's going. Until then, sit back and enjoy the interview.

Also on this week's show, we took a moment to pay our respects to Markie Rhodes. There is a benefit show to raise money for his funeral tonight (March 7) at the CrowBar, and another on hand for next week (March 15) at the Hideaway. It is very sad to see a young local musician pass so early in his life, and tragedies like this seem to bring out the best in the music community. Kudos to all that have stepped forward to help out at this time. Best wishes to all affected by this loss, and to all involved with the shows.
