History Happy Hour: Uninhabited Wasteland and Refuge for Criminals: Re-evaluating the East Tennessee Frontier with Material Culture
“Through furniture, we’ll uncover the history of our region and gain an appreciation for our rich material heritage.”
Historians are not limited to studying letters, diaries, and the written word to understand the past; they can use a variety of things including everyday items! Dr. Angela Keaton from Tusculum University’s history department will explore that very idea with her presentation, “Uninhabited Wasteland and Refuge for Criminals: Re-evaluating the East Tennessee Frontier with Material Culture.” According to Dr. Keaton, through her presentation “we will explore the ‘backcountry’ of east Tennessee in the late 18th and early 19th centuries using material culture as our guide.” She will investigate a range of objects including corner cupboards from Limestone, a Greeneville mahogany table, a Jonesborough desk, and many other local pieces. The program starts at 6:30 pm, and is free and open to the public.
