Grammy-nominated artist John McCutcheon coming to Kingsport

KINGSPORT — A big-name folk artist with local connections will perform in the Model City later this month.

Grammy-nominated singer, songwriter and instrumentalist John McCutcheon will take the stage at First Presbyterian Church as part of its new performing arts series.

The performance will take place Friday, May 17, at 7:30 p.m. in the sanctuary of the church, located at 100 W. Church Circle.

About McCutcheon

Though he grew up in Wisconsin, McCutcheon spent many years living in Scott County, first in Dungannon and later in Midway. He started playing music as a child, never imagining it would become his career.

It was in Northeast Tennessee and Southwest Virginia where McCutcheon said he “cut his teeth” musically. He learned to play the guitar, banjo, fiddle and other instruments from his neighbors, including Janette Carter at the Carter Fold.

McCutcheon has released 40 albums, the most recent being a tribute to Pete Seeger that was released in January.

At the show

Those who attend McCutcheon’s performance can expect to hear his new music, with some old hits and audience requests mixed in. He said his original songs focus on ordinary, everyday life and feature “a truckload” of musical instruments.

Though he’s played recently in surrounding towns, McCutcheon said he’s eager to perform in Kingsport for the first time in a few years.

“That area has always really felt like home to me. … I always love coming to that area, and I’ve kind of surrounded Kingsport in recent years, playing a lot down in Jonesborough and different areas around, but I haven’t gotten back into Kingsport,” McCutcheon said. “So I’m really looking forward to getting back in there.”

How to attend

Tickets can be purchased with cash or check and picked up at the church office Monday through Thursday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. They will also be available one hour before the performance in the church lobby.
